JUSTICE FOR WILDLIFE MALAYSIA

Our Work

Justice for Wildlife Malaysia (also known as JWM) aims to promote legal literacy among wildlife conservation fraternities. JWM engages with prosecutors of wildlife-related cases to further enhance the investigation methods and improve prosecutorial paperwork. Combining conservation science and the law, JWM also conducts immersive awareness campaigns on the other end of the pipeline with the judiciary for a targeted approach to sensitising judges to wildlife crime and its detrimental effects.

Activities

PROSECUTION TRAINING PROGRAMS

JWM coordinates and manages trial advocacy training for prosecution officers across government agencies (Perhilitan and other protected area agencies). The programs include mock trial sessions, case dissection, and paperwork discussion among prosecutorial and judicial officers. These immersive programs are designed to address issues throughout the wildlife crime case uptake from arrest to conviction.

ASSISTIVE DOCUMENTATION

As a part of our capacity-building effort, JWM also develops and trials assistive documentation for wildlife conservation enforcement officers and prosecutors. Among such documents is the Species Victim Impact Statement (SVIS), which is developed by Amanda Whitford from Hong Kong University.

TARGETED AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

JWM conducts targeted outreach programs on wildlife crimes, along with awareness seminar for judges and judiciary officers. These programs cover a wide array of issues and challenges in investigating and prosecuting wildlife-related cases in court.

A crucial element JWM incorporated in these programs is crime scene re-enactment that can be reviewed during workshop sessions.

RESEARCH AND ANALYTICS

JWM keeps track of wildlife-related court cases (either ongoing or solved) to gauge the effectiveness of the workshops conducted and to find gaps in the legislation.

Our current endeavour is creating a baseline for wildlife crime cases in Peninsular Malaysia to gain more insight on the prosecutorial and judicial resources dedicated to curbing wildlife crime in Peninsular Malaysia.
